Creative Engagement

Reaching those on the edges.

Creative Engagement

We are a commissioned provider of education delivering courses that develop participants through creative expression. We also run an Engage programme where individuals co-create projects, increasing engagement, and ownership.

Prison

Junction 42 is sharing creativity through the gate, providing new learning opportunities to those in prison. We invite local artists to come into prisons to share their creative expertise and skills.

The gate

We facilitate community exhibitions, where work produced on our creative courses is exhibited outside of the prison. This allows the local community to hear the voices of those in custody.

Creative Courses

Prison

At Junction 42 we recognise the

power of creativity to engage those

who find engaging hardest. Whatever

the media – be that art, music or

craft – it is a vehicle for us to help

increase confidence, trust, interaction

and participation with those who struggle

most. Engage projects have included

National Prison Radio, Storybook Mums,

choirs, fundraising events, and one-off

inspirational events.

We also deliver education courses that

use the creative arts to encourage the

personal and social development of those

taking part. We have worked with Reflex

nationally to produce high quality,

accredited courses that support people

in custody such as Urban Skillz Music

and Urban Skillz Theatre. To read about

the impact of our music delivery in

prison establishments, download our

report here. The tracks below were written

and recorded during our creative courses

that use music and lyric writing as a

means of expression:

Creative Artists

Through the gate

Junction 42 is strengthening links between

the prison and the community. Local artists

deliver courses in their field of creative

expertise and creative work of prisoners is

brought into the local community

through exhibitions. Projects in prison

have included drumming courses, choirs,

Christmas pantomimes and creative

writing courses.

Each of these courses has a creative

end-product, with those involved either

taking part in a performance in the

prison, having their work exhibited

in the community or having their

written pieces submitted for a book

publication. These results increase

the confidence of those taking part by

showing individuals their potential to

achieve.

Community

As well as performances and exhibitions

inside prisons, Junction 42 brings the

creative work of prisoners into the local

community. This allows a wider audience

to see the potential of those in prison,

challenging preconceptions and giving a

voice to those in custody. Previous exhibitions

have included work created in response to

“Your Deeds Don't Define You” and “What

is a Home?”, giving a voice to those in prison

that can be heard outside of the prison

walls.

“Prison was a long, hard road but it taught

me who I am and encouraged me to express

myself. It’s thanks to this exhibition that I

found a part of me that I would never have

known existed."

G, a participant on one of the art courses in prison, spoke after her release from prison as part of a community exhibition.
